Mrs. Billie Sue (Nelson) Alexander, 87, of Seymour, IN, passed away on Saturday, September 23, 2017. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends.

Billie was born in Urania, Louisiana, on February 21, 1930, to J.D. and Vera (Moore) Nelson.

On September 3, 1950, in Tullos, Louisiana, she married the love of her life, Willard E. Alexander. The couple celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on Sept. 3rd of this year.

Mrs. Alexander began her career as a legal secretary for an oil company in Louisiana prior to starting her family. In 1957, the family moved to Indiana, settling in Seymour in 1958. Although she lived the remainder of her life in Indiana, she always remained a true southern lady. After 17 years as secretary at First Baptist Church, she retired in 1991. Mrs. Alexander was a member of Cornerstone Community Church.

One of her greatest joys was spending time with her grandchildren and making memories with each of them. She began special family traditions that became cherished, including her annual Christmas tea. Each has special memories about Mamma’s biscuits, and her homemade hot fudge sundaes. She was an excellent southern cook and loved entertaining family and friends in her home. Billie was actively involved in numerous Bible studies, her church, Home Ec. Club, Gideon Auxiliary and the Friends in Christ group. She loved traveling with family and friends.

Billie is survived by her husband, daughters: Susan (John) Walter, Amy (Jeffrey) Asher, grandchildren: Johnny (Bessie) Walter, Hillary Walter, Al (Ashley) Asher, Amy (Jamie) Kenny, Laura Walter, and sister Bobbie (Chuck) Garber, and brother Jackie (Gloria) Nelson and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Voss & Sons Funeral Service on Thursday, September 28 from 4-7pm, with service immediately following at 7pm with Rev. Johnnie Spivey officiating. Graveside service will be at Riverview Cemetery at 11am on Friday.

Memorial contributions may be written to the Friedrich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (cureFa.org) or Jackson County GAL/CASA, in care of Voss & Sons Funeral Service.

She modeled so much to me! She modeled how to be a parent, in law, grandparent, Christian, and friend. I loved her dearly. I will treasure all of our times with coffee as we sat before the home woke up. She exposed me to fig preserves, giblet gravy, cornbread dressing and her homemade biscuits. To th very end I loved holding her hand. we will feast together again at the great banquet! Love you always. Jeffrey

During one particular Bible study we always seemed to sit next to each other & I seemed to be the provider of her tissues. We both seemed to be easy to tear up. Treasured my visits home to always visit with them both & loved her accent. Look forward to our reunion someday.

I will always have memories from Monday night Bible studies. Billie loved to praise her Savior. She was a very wise and loving sister in Christ. I learned many things from she and Peggy. Sorry for your loss.
