Catherine Louise (Schoentrup) Wertz, 82, of Seymour, passed away on November 5, 2014 at The Covered Bridge Nursing Home. Katie was born on March 08, 1932 in Shelby County, IN. Parents were Mr. Alysious Schoentrup and Gertrude (Gosch) Schoentrup, of Shelby County.
Catherine was as an elementary school teacher. She went to Indiana State University and then later to Indiana University Bloomington for her Masters Degree in education. She taught in Indianapolis, California, then at Kent, Wayne and Southside Elementary schools in Columbus and retired from Bartholomew County School System but still substitute taught in Columbus, and Seymour for many years. She was also in the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority as a lifetime member. Katie was also a long time member of Daughters of Isabelle in which she always served as an officer and was a member of Saint Ambrose Catholic Church, Seymour, IN. She was very involved in church programs and activities. Locally she and her husband, Bob, owned and operated the first pizza restaurant in Seymour, “Ring-a-Bring.”
Catherine married Robert Gene Wertz on July 14, 1958, whom had preceded her in death on March 28, 2014. They have one child, David Gene Wertz, married to Julie Vogel Wertz. There are four grandchildren David Paul Wertz, Meredith (Rusty) Wampler, Rebecah (Joseph) Xayaveth, all of Bloomington, IN. Rachel (Daniel) Jackson , she is stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. Great grand-children, Daegan, Avery Wampler, Mila, Natalie Xayaveth, Evelyn Jackson. She also has a brother, John Schoentrup, and several nieces and nephews. By marriage she had one brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Rita Wertz of Edinburgh, IN. Katie and Bob’s family was the center of their universe. Katie’s parents, her husband; Robert “Bob” Wertz, 2 brothers; Alysious Schoentrup Jr., Richard Scheontrup, and 1 sister, Florence Wisker preceded her in death. Holidays, vacations, and Sunday dinners were so important to both of them. Grandma Kate, would always be there for the family and welcomed everyone with open arms. Katie has beaten cancer 4 times, this is a testament to her inner strength and never ending faith. She will be sadly missed.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday November 10, 2014 at 10:00 AM at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Seymour, by the Father Dan Staublin with the assistance of Deacon Mike East. Graveside service will be held at Flat Rock Cemetery, Flat Rock, IN, at 1PM.
Visitation will be at Voss Chapel on Sunday November 9, from 2PM to 6PM with reciting of the Rosary at 1:30PM. There will also be visitation on Monday from 9AM until 9:30AM at Voss Chapel.
Memorial may be written to St. Ambrose Catholic Church.
