Catherine Louise Wertz

March 8, 1932 - November 5, 2014

Catherine Louise (Schoentrup) Wertz, 82, of Seymour, passed away on November 5, 2014 at The Covered Bridge Nursing Home. Katie was born on March 08, 1932 in Shelby County, IN. Parents were Mr. Alysious Schoentrup and Gertrude (Gosch) Schoentrup, of Shelby County.
Catherine was as an elementary school teacher. She went to Indiana State University and then later to Indiana University Bloomington for her Masters Degree in education. She taught in Indianapolis, California, then at Kent, Wayne and Southside Elementary schools in Columbus and retired from Bartholomew County School System but still substitute taught in Columbus, and Seymour for many years. She was also in the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority as a lifetime member. Katie was also a long time member of Daughters of Isabelle in which she always served as an officer and was a member of Saint Ambrose Catholic Church, Seymour, IN. She was very involved in church programs and activities. Locally she and her husband, Bob, owned and operated the first pizza restaurant in Seymour, “Ring-a-Bring.”
Catherine married Robert Gene Wertz on July 14, 1958, whom had preceded her in death on March 28, 2014. They have one child, David Gene Wertz, married to Julie Vogel Wertz. There are four grandchildren David Paul Wertz, Meredith (Rusty) Wampler, Rebecah (Joseph) Xayaveth, all of Bloomington, IN. Rachel (Daniel) Jackson , she is stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. Great grand-children, Daegan, Avery Wampler, Mila, Natalie Xayaveth, Evelyn Jackson. She also has a brother, John Schoentrup, and several nieces and nephews. By marriage she had one brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Rita Wertz of Edinburgh, IN. Katie and Bob’s family was the center of their universe. Katie’s parents, her husband; Robert “Bob” Wertz, 2 brothers; Alysious Schoentrup Jr., Richard Scheontrup, and 1 sister, Florence Wisker preceded her in death. Holidays, vacations, and Sunday dinners were so important to both of them. Grandma Kate, would always be there for the family and welcomed everyone with open arms. Katie has beaten cancer 4 times, this is a testament to her inner strength and never ending faith. She will be sadly missed.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday November 10, 2014 at 10:00 AM at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Seymour, by the Father Dan Staublin with the assistance of Deacon Mike East. Graveside service will be held at Flat Rock Cemetery, Flat Rock, IN, at 1PM.
Visitation will be at Voss Chapel on Sunday November 9, from 2PM to 6PM with reciting of the Rosary at 1:30PM. There will also be visitation on Monday from 9AM until 9:30AM at Voss Chapel.
Memorial may be written to St. Ambrose Catholic Church.

Katy would often help at Brown Elementary. She was always kind and knowledgeable with our children and a joy to work with. She touched many lives and was loved by us all.

Aunt Catherine was always the aunt taking pictures at family get togethers...family meant a lot to her. She was the aunt who called every Sunday evening to talk and listen to me after my parents died. She was always curious and always engaged in life...in living. She meant a lot to me...

so sorry to hear about the loss of Catherine. she was very nice lady who was a loving wife and loving mother and loving grandmother. I was helping her the time with her husband and she had a grandbaby that was born during that time her and her husband was so excited. always talking bout grandbabies and her son... prayer be with her son and his family during thist ime and may god bless..

Katie was one of the first people I met when I moved to Seymour 11 years ago. She was a dear friend to everyone! I always referred to her as the energizer bunny because she was always doing SOMETHING for SOMEONE. Now she can rest in the loving arms of Jesus. She deserves it. I will miss you Katie.

Bob and Katie have been neighbors for over 41 years. We have treasured their friendship and enjoyed their family. Witnessed their strong ties to their family with loving assistance given. Admired Katies contributions to children and resolve to survive illness over and over. They will be missed.

David and all, so sorry to hear about Catherine. She was a fine person and I liked her very much. May she rest in peace.

David, I will always remember our "Prom Date" back in the 70's and how your mother made sure we all had a pre-party. Her food was delicious and she was a good person to all of us. How she has endured the path taken is beyond words. She was strong, smart and beautiful. I know that you and your family will miss her. She was very good to my Aunt during her cancer battle and gave others hope. Thinking of you. It just wont' be the same on my neighborhood walk through the boulevards without her. I was so sorry to hear of Katie's passing along her way. I know she will be missed by many. We go back to the early 1950s at Indiana State Teachers College [now ISU]. The school was so small then that practically everyone on campus knew each other. And we all shared the same goal -- to become teachers. Katie and my husband Walt were from Shelby County, and I was from Evansville. But we eventually all landed in Seymour. We were both so busy with our families and our schools that we didn't get together much, but we always enjoyed visiting and catching up when our paths crossed.
