Mr. Daniel Thomas, Sr., 80, of Seymour, passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at his residence. He was born June 24, 1937, in Moultrie, GA, the son of Mary Williams and James Thomas. Daniel relocated to Seymour when he was 11 years old and was raised by his father and stepmother was Fannie Thomas.
He was a graduate of Shields High School, class of 1957. Daniel became one of Seymour’s best all time athletes excelling in basketball, football and track. In December 2017, he was inducted into the Seymour High School Hall of Fame. He played basketball for Purdue and Utah State. He was offered a chance to play with the Globetrotters but decided to come back to Seymour and start a family.
Daniel worked at Thompson’s Dairy, Fleetguard of Cummins and eventually retired from Golden Foundry in Columbus, Indiana.
He is survived by his wife, Veatrice L. Blewett; children, Daniel Thomas, Jr., Jay A. Thomas, David W. Thomas, Jason A. Thomas and Justin W. Thomas; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brother, Rick Pennybaker; and sisters, Sylvia McReynolds and Rita Perry.
Visitation will be Sunday, 2-8 pm and 11:00 to 1:00pm Monday at Voss & Sons Funeral Service in Seymour. The service will begin at 1 pm with Pastor Leon Harris and Pastor Roxzedena McKee officiating. Memorials may be written to Riley’s Children Hospital or Bethel AME Methodist Church.
