This is a text message between our cousin, Mel Coulter, and me. I did a screen shot and shared, but I’m told no one can see it. Mel: I just thought of this ... the first time Denny and I played chess, I totally underestimated his ability to play, and he beat me in 4 freakin’ moves ... lol He was an excellent chess player. He totally taught me strategies I will never forget ... I thought you might like having cool stories about your brother. Me: I do like to hear stories. Thank you, Mel. I never even knew he played chess. We didn’t as kids. John taught me. Thank you. Mel: OMG!!! You never knew? He was damn good. I’m glad I can tell you good stories about Dennis.

My brother Denny was my first friend. We did a lot together growing up. Back in a time when schools were smaller, there were two classes to a room. Every other year, we would be in the same classroom. We attended many of the same dances in high school. We went to many battles of the bands at the armory in Columbus. He had a set of drums and was self-taught. He sat in with a VFW band once, never played with a band at all, let alone in public, about 15-16 years old, and did a great job. Everyone loved him. The first song was “Running Bear.” There is a drum solo, and he aced it! When he joined the Navy, he did boot camp at the Naval Training Center in the Great Lakes. Mom, Charlena, Lenny and I went to see him graduate. Then he was stationed at Port Hueneme, California, with the Navy Seabees, Mobile Construction Battalion 5 (MCB-5). I moved to California, too. I took his set of drums with me so he could play them there. I watched him go to Vietnam twice. The Seabees were so nervous, scared they wouldn’t come back, and each and every one got on that plane, smiling and joking. Thank God they all came back. I watched him become a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved his family with all his heart. So many memories. I will miss him terribly.
