Mrs. Edith Beckman, 88, of Seymour, passed away on Monday, May 7, 2018 at IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with her family nearby. She was born in Jackson County on August 4, 1929, the daughter of the late Claude and Beatrice (Jaynes) Bedel.
Funeral services will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Saturday, May 12 at 10:30 am with Rev. Philip Bloch officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery.
Family and friends may call at Voss & Sons Funeral Service on Friday from 4-8 pm and at the church on Saturday from 9:30 am until time of service.
She was one of fourteen siblings, and attended Conologe School with her siblings. She was a weaver at the Seymour Woolen Mill before marrying. On June 21, 1947, she married Harold Herman Beckman; he preceded her in death on December 12, 2009. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She was a homemaker and loving wife. She was active in Girl Scouts for many years. She traveled several times in Latin America and at home enjoyed sewing, flower gardening, canning, crewel embroidery, buying and making Christmas ornaments, and of course, shopping. In early days she enjoyed baking pies, and more recently, making persimmon puddings. Talking Books rejuvenated her childhood interest in reading. Nature was an important part of her life; from hickory nut gathering to excursions to Muscatatuck Wildlife Refuge.
She is survived by her children, Joyce (Roger) Vehslage and Roger (Andrea Singer) Beckman; grandchildren, Nathaniel (Evelyn) Beckman, Melanie Vehslage (partner Raphael Cornford) and Kimberley (Jacob) Lingeman; one great grandchild, Franklin Beckman and another great grandson on the way; two sisters, Ann Gay and Doris Bedel; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Joe Bedel, Claude Altis Bedel, Cornelius Glen Bedel, Louvon Bedel, Francis Bedel and Ivan M. Bedel; and sisters, Mary Williams, Florence Evelyn Bedel, Madge Bedel, Carol Ruth Ray and Emma Bedel.
The family wishes to thank three of her loving caregivers, Rachael, Leah, and Natalie, who helped care for her at home during her last years of life.
