Mrs. Helen Carver Redmon, 100, of Columbus, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2019 at Silver Oaks Health Campus. She was born in Marysville, Indiana to the late John Henry Carver and Sarah Gertrude (Hanger) Carver.
The family moved several times during her youth and finally settled in Petersville where her father owned and operated the Petersville Grocery. Helen graduated from Columbus High School.
On March 10, 1940, she married Joseph C. Redmon. They lived on their farm in Clay Township where Joe farmed and milked dairy cattle. They raised two daughters, Rebecca “Becky” Irvin and Roberta “Bobbi” Speaker.
When her daughters were both in school, Helen began working outside the home. She worked at Irwin Union Bank, became manager of the Columbus License Branch, and finally was manager of the Cosco Credit Union.
Helen’s hobbies included oil and water painting, traveling and politics. She served as the Democratic Vice Chairwoman for several years.
Helen is survived by her daughters, Becky Irvin and Bobbi Speaker; grandchildren, Holly Northam, Joel (Christine) Cheesman, Amy (Tom) Dowd and Erin (Tony) Miller; thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe Charles Redmon; sisters, Beulah Laswell, Doris DeCamp and Eva Boyd; and two sons-in-law.
A Celebration of Life service will be conducted by Voss & Sons Funeral Service at Petersville United Methodist Church (2781 N 500 E, Columbus, IN 47203) on Monday, May 13 at 4 pm with visitation beginning at 3 pm. Memorials may be given to Petersville United Methodist Church or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
