Jerry Brown of Seymour left this life on March 2nd, 2021 at IU Methodist Health in Indianapolis, Indiana. Jerry was born June 26th, 1942 to Frank “Wayne” and Elizabeth “Betty” Brown (nee Lemmon) in Elizabeth, IN. He graduated in the Class of 1960 from South Central High School in Harrison County. He received his Bachelor’s in Education from Western Kentucky University in 1964, and Master’s in Education from Indiana University in 1967. Jerry married Elinor Lambertus of Lanesville, IN on November 25th, 1965. They celebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversary last November.
Jerry was a long-time educator, retiring in 1999 after 35 years of teaching. He enjoyed teaching math to hundreds of students over the years from South Central High School in Harrison County, Jennings County High School and Seymour Middle School. He was frequently stopped and acknowledged by former students who remembered him fondly, making him feel his many years of teaching were well spent.
Jerry was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where he served in various capacities over the years including youth leader, elder, foundation board member and taught the Men’s Bible Breakfast for 25 years. Jerry was also an active member of the Lutheran Laymen’s League (LLL) where he served as Secretary, Treasurer and finally President of the Indiana District LLL. He also served on the Board of Governors for the Lutheran Hour Ministries for 8 years.
Jerry, with his wife Elinor, spent many hours volunteering at the Orphan Grain Train, where he served as Treasurer for the last 18 years.
Jerry inherited a passion for Genealogy from his mother, a long-time member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. That led him to join the Sons of the American Revolution, where he served as the David Benton Chapter President for 5 years.
Jerry’s other hobbies included spending time with his grandchildren, golfing with friends or his grandson, driving and showing his Corvette, gardening, reading, playing Euchre and cheering on his beloved Indiana Hoosiers!
Jerry is survived by his wife, Elinor, his daughter Angela Collins (Keith), grandchildren Ryan and Ashley Collins, and his brother Stanley Brown. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Betty Brown.
Friends may call on Thursday, March 4, 2021 at Voss & Sons Funeral Service in Seymour from 4-8pm.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 5, 2021 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lanesville, Indiana at 12pm. A visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:30am until 12pm.
Burial will follow at St John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Lanesville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Immanuel Lutheran Church or the Orphan Grain Train.
In accordance with CDC guidelines, masks are required as well as social distancing within the building. Cards and notes of condolence are most welcome.
