Mr. John G. Brugos, 96, of Seymour, passed away Friday, April 25, 2014 at Covered Bridge Health Campus.
Born February 11, 1918 in Gary, IN, he was the son of John and Anna Barbara (Kanaual) Brugos.
On September 7, 1940 in Crown Point, IN he married Laura Louise Ida Baldauf who precedes him in death.
John graduated in 1935 from EmersonHigh School. He went on to receive his apprenticeship in Pipe fitting, working in several steel mills in Northern Indiana. In 2013 he received his 65 year pin as a member of local 597 of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada.
Throughout John’s life, he was involved in various organizations. John was the founding member and first President of the Merrillville, IN Little League. As a past member of the Seymour Noon Lions Club he received the Lion of the Year Award in 2003. He was a member of the Foresters and past member of the Winamac Car Club and the Merri-Squares square dancing group.
John loved to travel, ballroom dance, golf, read and keep up on the world events. The highlight of his daily life was spending time with his family and attending all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren’s events. His travels include going to Europe, China and Africa.
John was a beloved husband and brother, dedicated father, grandfather and great grandfather and genuine friend. He loved living life and took great pride in remembering names, being a good listener and spending each day learning something new. His smile and blue eyes lit up the room.
He is survived by his children Michael John (Sharon) Brugos, Jeffrey Francis (Karen) Brugos, Carol Ann (Skip) Chandler, Rochelle Louise (Dan) Doty; brother, Dave (Shirley) Brugos; sister Helen Desiderio; grandchildren Christopher (Jessica) Brugos, Todd (Jessie) Brugos, Brittany Brugos, Jeffrey Brugos, Matthew (Lea) Chandler, Ryan (Tennille) Chandler, Jacqueline (Christopher) Lauriat, Elizabeth (Jamie) Borecki; great grandchildren Owen Chandler, Samuel Chandler, Liam Chandler, Addison Chandler, Myles Chandler, Analise Lauriat, Emilie Lauriat, Lula Brugos, and Logan Brugos.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; grandson Marc Owen Chandler; brothers George Brugos, Steve Brugos, Theodore Brugos; and sisters Magdalene Bastian and Martha Brugos.
A Memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalists Congregation, 7850 West Goeller Blvd., Columbus, IN, on Sunday, May 25, at 5:00 PM with Rev. Dennis McCarty officiating.
Memorials may be written to the Marc Owen Chandler Memorial Scholarship (Community Foundation of Jackson County), UUCCI Peace Camp, Hospice of Schneck Medical Center, and Covered Bridge Health Campus Activity Department.
