Jonathan H. “Jon” Bevers, 65, of Columbus passed away Saturday, April 20, 2019. He was born in Seymour to the late Joe and Ida Belle (Mitchell) Bevers. Family and friends may gather at Voss & Sons Funeral Service in Seymour on Friday from 4 to 8pm.
Jon’s interests kept him surrounded by nature. He was an avid golfer and bird watcher, and he had a deep love for the forests and scenery of southern Indiana. He also cared deeply for animals, volunteering at the Humane Society, caring for his longtime feline companions, Rosamund and Wilson, and taking his beloved Weimaraner, Sal, on long walks in the fields.
Jon graduated from Hanover College in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. In 1980 he graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his residency in psychiatry at the University of Louisville. He held the position of medical director at Bloomington Meadows and Columbus Behavioral Center.
Jon is survived by his children, Evan Bevers (Nicole Clouse) and Elliott Bevers, and his nephews Tim Grantham, Scott Grantham, Todd Grantham, Jeff Grantham, nieces Rachel Towriss, Sara Hildreth, and Hannah Cash, and 17 great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Mark Bevers, and sister Nancy Grantham.
Memorials may be written to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, Bartholomew County Humane Society or Columbus Fellowship Club, in care of Voss & Sons Funeral Service.

We had the privileged of meeting Jon when my daughter babysit for his sons. I considered him a friend. It was always a joy to see him when we would pick up the boys. He was always friendly and respectful. We share the regret of his death and the loss the family must feel at this time. We will miss you Jon. Dorothy Weaver-May 2019

Jonathan was one of the smartest guys i've ever known--i remember Jonathan with all of us fraternity brothers at Hanover College laughing together and "sunbathing" in the Spring up on Beta Beach--the fraternity house roof--good times!--jim ortale, Hanover College, Beta Theta Pi fraternity brother, from nashville, tn.

I always really enjoyed just taking some time to visit with "Sal's dad" ;-) when he would bring him to the clinic for his check ups. Dr. Bevers was an extremely pleasant and caring person and always took the time to ask how I was doing at each visit. I worked with Dr. B. for 20 years, beginning at Koala then Tara Treatment Center, Columbus Health and Rehab and finally ending up at Columbus Behavioral Center. Words can't express how sad and sorry I am to hear of Jon's passing. My heart goes out to the family and many friends that were lucky to have Jon in their life. This is hard to accept but we are taught that everything happens for a reason and we have to accept life on life terms. Jon helped so many people and he did it with passion and a genuine attitude of wanting to help. When I lost my dad 20 years ago I knew that I loved him, but I didn't realize how other people felt about him. Jon was loved and respected by so many and the family will hear that today and in the coming weeks about Jon. I pray that this helps with the grief and saddens that now exists.

Oops, graduated from SHS in 1972.....I am sure Jon is chuckling at my error and thinking “ typical of Sue”. Thanks for your memories... they all make me smile.

I am shocked and saddened to hear of Jon’s passing. Jon was a classmate of mine, graduating from SHS in 1974. He was vibrant, kind, fun, and very SMART. Jon was involved, choir, President of class, and many other organizations. It was no surprise that he excelled in everything he went after.His profession in becoming a doctor of psychiatry emulates his character, as he enjoyed helping others. I have many good memories of Jon. It was some time ago the last time I saw him. However, it was CVS in Columbus. He was his usual self that day, positive, happy and gave me a “feel good feeling”. I am so saddened for your loss. You all will be in my prayers.

Dr Jon, you shared your wisdom, compassion, and humor with not only the patients you served, but also those of us who were fortunate to work alongside you. I had the privilege of collaborating professionally with you for more than 16 years, both in Columbus and in your Seymour office. I respected your holistic approach to treatment, your encouragement and support of my practice, and your positive, growth-promoting style. Thanks for being a great doc and a kind human. I was shocked and saddened to learn of Jon’s passing. Jon was my first friend from Emerson kindergarten and remained close all through college. I was a regular at the Bevers’ home and he at ours. Our moms made sure we got across 6th St then we would play all day. Later it got even more convenient when they moved to Johnson St and he was just down the alley. I’ve read other descriptive comments such as kind, gentle...even renaissance. I get that. We had more than our share of fun but Jon had a level of maturity not found in most teenagers and I know his voice of reason helped save many of us from bad decisions. I moved away forty years ago and we fell out of touch. I never knew his kids nor he mine. Family brought me back a few times a year. We spoke on the phone but could never get together. Jon was always a kind and hopeful person this past year that I have gotten to know him better. I knew him when our kids were in CICC together and as a Physician in our community but he has been a source of strength and courage and I did not have a chance to tell him. Dr Bevers will forever be one of the greatest docs I've worked with. He was, without fail, kind and compassionate and treated each patient as a whole person and not just symptoms of an illness. This world is a better place because of his dedicated service here. Deeply respected and truly missed.

I am so very sorry to hear this news. Jon was a good friend in high school and we shared many memories growing up. My deepest condolences to his family. Praying.

I worked with Dr.Bevers in the mental health field for over twelve years...in many ways he mentored me as I grew as a therapist. I had the ultimate respect for him and his knowledge about human frailities. He was also the sharpest damn dresser I knew. Jon, you will be missed!!

I am deeply saddened to hear of Jon’s passing, I was his fraternity brother at Hanover, albeit a year younger. I always looked up to Jon as a mentor, big brother and a confidant. He was a true renaissance man, smart, talented, gracious, and welcoming. His door was always open for advice and insight. Also had the pleasure of working with him at the Hanover College Englishton Park program for a summer. Thanks to Facebook posts was able to reconnect with him I recently. Jon was a dear friend of mine while at Hanover and the years beyond. I have many great memories of fun times with him, perhaps the best when we traveled to Rocky Mountain National Park for spring break during our senior year. Jon recently mentioned to me how much he would like to return. So sorry that we could not work something out so that could happen. Jon is now in a better place, though, and we can all be thankful for having known him and having the privilege of being his friend. God bless.

Hello everyone. It is not easy for me to express how I feel at the news of Jon's passing. I loved Jon and his entire family. I felt I was part of their clan from grade school on. Although Jon and I did not remain in close contact as our lives evolved I will never forget my memories of Jon and his family. His father and mother, Ida Belle and Joe were gentle and wise people. His brother Mark was central in luring me back from the IU School of Medicine in Indianapolis to this community where I spent the bulk of nearly three decades of practice in medicine.. In junior high school we would hurry across sixth street to their home on Homestead Avenue in order to intentionally burn toasted cheese sandwiches for lunch. We played football together with him providing those big holes in the line for me to barrel thru and rack up a few yards. I remember summers at the farm and eating honey still on the comb, fishing at the lake and chasing girls. I could go on and on . Maybe I have already gone on too much...
