Mr. Kenneth E. Spoor, 80, of Seymour, passed away on Sunday, August 27 at his home. He was born August 19, 1937 in Whiting, IN to Elmer and Annis Tuttle Spoor. On September 2, 1957 he married Martha Hoheimer in Fordsville, KY. He graduated from Kentucky School of Mortuary science in 1957 in Louisville and worked at Phillips Funeral Home and O.D. White and Sons Funeral Home before moving to Seymour in 1959 to work at Voss & Sons, Inc. He purchased Voss & Sons in 1967 and was the CEO there until 1999. He then began a full time construction company called Heritage Development which later transformed into Heritage Real Estate and built over 300 homes, several apartment complexes, and multiple new subdivisions. He owned two laundromats and the Brave Owl Skating Rink and Teen Center, and he started Quality Vault Company.
“Poppy” was known for his generous nature and ready smile. He loved gathering family for burgers, chili, biscuits and gravy, or anything that brought everyone together. Always quick witted and ready with a joke, Poppy loved meeting his friends for breakfast or mid-morning coffee at Bevers Deli. He enjoyed fishing trips, Cincinnati Reds games, and working with his hands. Always able to come up with a solution to any problem, Poppy’s loving and generous nature was felt by countless people in the community.
As a member of Seymour Jaycees he was the 1963 Jaycee Man of the Year, he was a Rotarian, 1963 President of the Redding School PTA, 1972 Boss of the Year, as well as a past member of Seymour Elks, Seymour Country Club, Chamber of Commerce board member, and president of the Sunshine School. Ken was a member of First Baptist Church and a former deacon and former chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was also former president of the Indiana Funeral Directors Association and was a member of National Selected Morticians. He also was on the board of Fidelity Federal Savings and Loan.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Cindi (Brad) Lucas, Connie (Mark) Adams, 7 granddaughters, Becky (Brent) Schepman, Lydia (Travis) Maupin, Meredith Adams, Janelle Adams, Kristin (Brian) Bear, and Lanci (Blake Haswell) Lucas, two grandsons, Chad (Jill) Whittymore and Brantley Adams, five great grandchildren, Madaline and Claire Schepman, Ansley Maupin, Riley Bear, and Nash Haswell. He is survived by a brother, Vern (Gia) Spoor and sister, JoAnn (Robert) Kelly.
Funeral services will be on Thursday, August 31, 2017 at 10:30 AM at Voss & Sons Funeral Service with the Reverend Dr. Jeremy Myers officiating. Friends may call at Voss & Sons Funeral Service on Wednesday, August 30 from 2 to 8 PM and on Thursday, August 31 from 9:00-10:30 AM.
Memorial checks may be written to the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 108 Cops & Kids. The Shop with a Cop program was dear to Ken as he loved to celebrate Christmas and always wanted all children to have a present under the tree.

I am so sad to learn of my friend Kenny Spoor's passing. He was a ball of fun--and boy I loved to tease him as much as he loved to tease me. He would give anyone the shirt off his back. What a wonderful man. God takes the best ones first! The work on earth isn't done yet for the rest of us! Prayers to Connie and Cindi and their entire family!.

Kenny was my boss when I first went to work at Voss and Sons. He taught me many things about life and the funeral business but most of all I remember him driving to Kentucky for my father's funeral. Seeing him smiling at the back of the chapel uplifted me and my entire family. He was there when I needed him the most. I will always remember that day. May you rest in peace my friend. Kenny was a kind man…always ready for a laugh. He brought comfort and direction to so many families when they needed it most. The stars that shine brightest are missed all the more when they are gone. Kenny will be missed by so many. My sincere condolences to Mrs. Spoor and family.

Our profession has suffered a great loss with Mr. Spoor's death. He was respected among many generations of funeral directors and a great advocate of Indiana funeral service. While we as a profession have been lessened by his passing, we are most certainly better because of his dedicated service representing all that is good about caring for others. On behalf of the IFDA Board of Directors, Staff, and Membership, we offer our condolences to those who loved him most and gratitude for sharing him with us through the years! Tom and I are so saddened to learn of Kenny's passing. He was such a wonderful, sweet man! We always loved to visit with him whenever we'd run into each other, usually at Steak and Shake. Ken was working at Voss and Sons when Bud Voss died. I remember he came to the house to get a handkerchief for Bud's pocket because he always words handkerchief in his suit cost pocket, and he felt Bud did not look right without one. It was such a small gesture but so kind and so moving to know how much Ken thought of Bud. Catherine Tillman, daughter of Bud's second Eileen wife.

I have known Kenny for over 40 years . I used to work in restaurants when I was younger, and he would come in and meet with friends for coffee . I waited on him numerous times over the years. He was always the most kind, polite, and funny, every time he was there. If he wasn't in my section, he would holler across the restaurant " Aren't you speaking today ?" Kenny was a great man and will be missed by many.

I remember him from church. Such a wonderful man.. Always had a smile on his face and you feel welcome. Be will be greatly missed.. Prayers for the family from Margie Franklin

Kenny was a very nice man who touched many lives. He was my landlord for 6 years and he was always understanding about anything. I miss seeing his truck around town and always waving.
