Mr. Marshall Howard, 81, of Seymour, passed away Tueday, February 10, 2015 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Marshall was born in December 24, 1933 in Leslie County, KY, the son of the late Girdley Howard and Frankie (Campbell) Walker.
On December 2, 1956, he married Sharon (Hackney) Howard in Plainfield, Indiana.
Marshall proudly served for many years in the U.S. Army where he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Army Occupation medal for his service in during the Korean War. While serving in Germany as Sergeant 1st Class in Company B of the 12th Armored Infantry Battalion, Marshall was on border patrol between East and West Germany. He was honorably discharged after 5 ½ years of service.
Marshall was a faithful member of the Church of Christ on Meadowbrook Drive in Seymour and, after his distinguished service in the U.S. Armed Forces, Marshall was the owner of Marshall’s Service Center for 23 years, then after retiring, worked at the Swifty Oil Company for 12 years prior to his final retirement. Marshall also proudly served the local community in many capacities including President of the Seymour Board of Zoning and Planning, President of the Jackson County Sherriff’s Merit Board for 42 years, President of the Seymour airport board and longtime member of the Lions Club. Marshall will be greatly missed by his loving family and many dear friends.
Marshall is survived by his loving wife Sharon, his two children, Debra K. Howard-Smith and Douglas R. Howard; two grandchildren, Richard Sebert Smith and Ashley (Kendall) Walters; a great-grandchild, Josalyn Jade Walters; three siblings, John Walker of Cornetsville, KY, Walter Walker of Hyden, KY, and Nora (Walker) Morgan of Hyden, KY.
He is preceeded in death by his parents; his son-in-law William A. Smith; five brothers: Ernie Walker, Martin Walker, Melvin Roy Walker, Donald Ray Walker and Malcolm Walker; and two sisters: Shirley (Walker) Lance and Maggie Mae Walker.
Funeral service will be held at Voss Chapel on Friday, February 13, 2015 at 1:00 p.m., with the Johnathon Purkhiser and Jonathan Reames officiating.
Family and friends may call at Voss Funeral Service, Voss Chapel at 316 N. Chestnut St. on Friday after 11 a.m. until time of service.
Burial will follow at Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1415 North Gate Road in Madison, IN.
The Family has asked that Memorials be designated to the Wounded Warriors Foundation or the Juvenile Diabetes Association.
