Philip Anthony (Tony) Dittmer, 67, passed away Saturday, September 11, 2021.
Tony was a Seymour native and long-time educator/technology director at Brownstown Central Community Schools where he also coached several sports including boys and girls tennis, before his retirement in 2018.
He was born August 4, 1954, in Seymour to J. Avery and Melba (Ahlbrand) Dittmer. His parents were both educators in the Seymour school system, and it was natural that Tony followed that profession when he enrolled at Indiana State University. While at Indiana State, Tony was a member of the ISU men’s tennis team and played both singles and doubles for legendary Sycamore coach Duane Klueh. This followed his career at Seymour High School, where he was a 4-year letter-winner and was named the team’s MVP after winning the IHSAA sectional singles title during his senior year in 1971-72.
In the History of Seymour High School Sports, it was noted “The Dittmer Family name was synonymous with tennis in Seymour” as Tony followed in the footsteps of his father and brothers in playing the sport. Later, he proudly watched his sons, Matt and Scott, continue that legacy when they attended Seymour High School and played tennis. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Tony always enjoyed “going to the boat,” which meant making a trip to a casino to play video poker and wishing the slot machine to “be good to me one time!” which it was on more than one occasion.
He also liked to talk sports with friends (especially his favorite team, the Chicago Bears, and his favorite player, Larry Bird), play Fantasy Football, and travel to Greenwood to watch his grandsons, Noah and Cash, play youth sports.
He is survived by two sons, Matthew (Katie) of Greenwood, IN and Scott (Michelle) of Cape Coral, FL; two grandsons, Noah and Cash Dittmer; two brothers, John (Ellen) Dittmer of Greencastle, IN and Randy “Dude” Dittmer of Seymour; two sisters, Patty Cress of Charlestown, IN and Polly Berent of Seymour, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Stan Dittmer; and brother-in-law, Hugh Cress.
All services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Tony’s name may be gifted to an organization of the donor’s choosing.
