Mr. Randolph John “Smitty” Smith, 91 of Seymour, Indiana, passed away Thursday, July 23, 2015, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Smitty was born September 23, 1923, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of the late Randolph J. & Luna Reed Smith.
He married Ethel G. Albertson on November 2, 1946, in Seymour, who preceded him in death on January 5, 2002. He married Irene Hill November 27, 2003, in Seymour, Indiana, who preceded him in death.
Smitty was a member of The Point (formerly the First Church of the Nazarene). He was a WWII US Army Veteran. He worked at Cummins Engine Company when he was younger. He then started Smitty’s Gulf Service in 1956 which he ran until 1963. In 1963, he started Smitty’s Transmission Service which he owned and operated until his retirement. He was the Maintenance Supervisor for the Seymour Waste Water Treatment Plant. He was a member of the Seymour Country Club where he enjoyed golfing every chance he got and was also a member of the Hoosier Hackers traveling golf league. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time.
He is survived by his children, Randolph “Randy” (Mary) Smith III, Patty (Michael) Cockerham, Sherry (Junior) Dowling, Cindy (James) Campbell, Rhonda (Jerry) Sutherland, and Thomas (Peggy) Hill; his ten grandchildren, Randolph J. (Kelly) Smith IV, Adam W. (Trish Surfus) Smith, Chad M. (Renae) Cockerham, Bryan “BJ” (Amy) Cockerham, Dustin L. (Mary) Dowling, Shawn E. Israel, Chad (Amy) Sutherland, Matt (Tara) Sutherland, Thomas (Angela) Hill, and Kelsey Hill; several great-grandchildren, two brothers, Robert L. Smith and Edward Wayne Smith; one sister, Dorothy Storey, and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wives, a granddaughter, a grandson, three brothers, Ernest Smith, Farrell Ray Smith and Orville Scott; four sisters, Erma Smith Sutton, Helen Johnson Maxwell, Lela Johnson (Scott) Curry and Margaret Smith Marling.
Funeral service will be at Voss Chapel on Monday, July 27, 2015, at 1:00 pm with Dr. Garrett Mills and Rev. Steve Greene officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery with full military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled Veterans 47, Korean and Vietnam Veterans, all of Seymour.
Friends and family may call at Voss Chapel on Sunday from 2 to 6 pm and Monday after 12:00 pm until time of service.
