One fall night in 1955 or 1956, I followed the Shields HS football team up the alley from Emerson Field to the locker room area at Shields gymnasium or maybe I was following the High School Band marching up 5th Street in those awful red uniforms. Whatever, I was in the gym. There, sprawled on the seats nearest the locker room entrance was Bode Hill. He was still in his football uniform and completely drenched in sweat from head to toe. He was drinking water from a glass quart fruit jar. (That was the coolest!). Here was one of my athletic heroes, along with Danny Thomas. I didn't say a word to Bode. I was so in awe. He was halfback on the football team and undefeated in 1956. This Shields gym is where he was a guard on the HS basketball team. He was a fantastic dribbler and put the crowd in a frenzy with his fancy dribbling. I was only 11 or 12 years old and still have vivid pictures of him in my mind playing sports to this day. Thanks Bode for the lifetime memories! God bless you, Carol. Your Dad, Leon, and my Dad, Allan, were Standard Oil men back in the day. Jerry Waldkoetter

Carol: I am so sorry to hear about Bode’s passing to be with Jesus. Bode was one of my best friends along with Buddy Tidd and Norman Bobb. I remember the good time we had when you and Bode came to Chicago to have Bode interview for a job and we went to the Playboy club. What a good time we had. Carol and I are deeply saddened. May God hold you in his hands as you mourn his passing. Dick and Carol Schroer

I enjoyed caring for Bode at LCH. He always made my night by saying something silly. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was so easy to get along with. We always had one another laughing our butts off. I miss him so much, and my wing isn't the same without him. I know he is in Heaven, and I believe I will see him again. My condolences to Bode's family, and thank you very much for choosing LCH, because if you hadn't, I never would have been able to meet him.
