Mr. William H. “Bill” Winters, 82 of Seymour, passed away Thursday, January 5, 2017, at home with his wife of 59 years, Doris by his side.
Bill was born on April 14, 1934 in Westerville, Ohio, the son of the late Garland and Mildred (Beverly) Winters.
After graduating high School, Bill Graduated from Heidelberg University with a Bachelor’s Degree, then he attended Pittsburgh University, where he achieved his Master’s Degree. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Sertoma Club of Seymour. Bill enjoyed all sports, particularly IU Football and Basketball. Bill was also an animal lover, loved to garden and was known for his meticulous lawn. He also loved to walk, both on the golf course and throughout the neighborhood. Bill was easy going and one of the kindest and friendliest men you could meet, always willing to lend a hand. He enjoyed participating in several Sertoma events including Christmas Miracle, Oktoberfest, and Monte Carlo.
Bill married the love of his life Doris on August 28, 1957 in West Salem, Ohio. Together they shared 59 wonderful years of marriage and lovingly raised two children.
He began his career in retail with Higbee’s Department Store, then moved to J.C. Penney where he was a buyer and later a store manager. He and Doris moved the family from Ohio, to New Jersey to the Chicago area to the Milwaukee area and finally to Seymour, Indiana where he was the J.C. Penney Store Manager for many years before retirement. Even in retirement, he drove truck for many years to support his family.
Bill is survived by his wife Doris, children, Richard Winters (Karen) and Sharon Winters (Daniel Chung), grandchildren, Jennifer Unger (Jeff), Dawn Rump (Jason) and Daniel Winters, great granddaughter, Aubrey Unger.
He is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Raymond, Robert and David Winters.
Funeral Mass will be Monday, January 9, 2017 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 10:00 a.m., with Father Dan Staublin officiating and assisted by Deacon Mike East. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery, Seymour.
Family and friends may call at Voss Chapel on Sunday, January, 8th, from 2-5 p.m. and on Monday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church after 9 a.m. until time of Mass
