Charles M. “Chuck” Layman, 73, of Seymour, IN passed away on Friday evening, March 24, 2023 at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour. He was born in Seymour, IN on July 18, 1949, the son of Charles L. and Betty J. (Burcham) Layman. On November 20, 1971, in Louisville, KY he married Donna F. Hedgspeth and she survives.
In addition to his wife Donna, Charles is survived by his daughters, Christina “Tina” Jackson of Jeffersonville, IN and Tiffany M. Brewer of Seymour; and three grandchildren, Kelsie and Kayle Jackson of Jeffersonville, IN and Marshall Brewer of Seymour.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Charles L. and Betty J. Layman and two brothers, Scotty Layman and Rickie Layman.
Chuck worked as a machinist for thirty-four years in Columbus at Reliance Electric retiring in the early 2000’s. He served in the United States Army as part of the National Guard of Indiana for almost thirty years retiring as a Staff Sergeant in 1999 helping with communications.
After retirement Chuck enjoyed collecting old military items from different wars. When he was in his younger years, he enjoyed playing the drums in a small country band in Seymour. When in the band he had the privilege of playing throughout South-Central Indiana for various organizations and businesses. He enjoyed cooking holiday meals for his family and was the home decorator when it came to putting up holiday decorations. He was known for being the provider for his family and others, especially those in need. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and anything that was military related.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at 7 p.m. at the Voss and Son’s Funeral Home in Seymour. The family will meet friends from 4:00 p.m. until the time of services at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. A graveside service will take place on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison, IN where military honors will be conducted by the United States Army Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Indy Honor Flight.
