Mr. C. Albert Seibert, 91 of Seymour, Indiana, passed away Friday, November 6, 2015, at his home after a brief illness.
He was born October 10, 1924, in Heltonville, Indiana, the son of the late Cletus and Irene Waldon Seibert.
He married his high school sweetheart, Zelda Dyer, on June 15, 1942, in Greensburg, Indiana. They were married 67 years at the time of her death on January 11, 2009.
After graduating from Shields High School in 1942, Al started working for the B&O Railroad as a “jackman”, operating the jack, jacking up and lining up the track. He was drafted into the Army in March of 1943. He was a combat engineer with the 75th Infantry Division participating in, enduring and surviving the greatest land battle, The Battle of the Bulge, earning several awards including the Purple Heart. In January of 1946, Al started at Cummins Engine Company. From 1965 until he retired in 1982, he was the Master Parts Book Supervisor.
An avid aviator, owning several airplanes in his lifetime, Al built his own experimental aircraft in the early 1980s. In May 2005, he received The Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award. This is awarded to pilots with more than 50 years of flying experience. In 1996, a dedicated group of local residents including Al, Jack Hildreth, Ted Jordan, Harry Knight, Lou Osterman, and Lou Thole started the Freeman Army Air Field Museum to preserve the history of the cadets who trained at Freeman Field during World War II. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Fraternal Order of Eagles, AOPA, EAA, and the Civil Air Patrol.
He is survived by his three sons, Verney Scott Seibert, Steven Albert (Judy) Seibert, and Joseph Mark Seibert; grandchildren, Kevin (Tonyia) Seibert and Jennifer John; a great-granddaughter, Anjelica Seibert; and two siblings, David Seibert and Barbara Glenn.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 13, 2015, at Voss Chapel with Rev. Gary Dyer officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery with full military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled Veterans 47, Korean and Vietnam Veterans, all of Seymour.
Friends and family may call at Voss Chapel on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. and Friday after 9:00 a.m. until time of service.
