Mr. Gerald J. Pottschmidt, 84, of Seymour, Indiana, passed away Sunday, March 6, 2016, at the Lutheran Community Home.

Gerald was born March 6, 1932, in Seymour, the son of the late Lawrence and Carrie (Otte) Pottschmidt.

He married Nancy Frey on July 14, 1957, in Seymour, Indiana at the Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Gerald was a charter member of Redeemer Lutheran Church where he served on various committees and sang with the Redeemer Lutheran Choir for many years. He graduated from Shields High School, served in the US Army during the Korean War and worked his entire life as a farmer. When he was younger, he worked with his brothers, Ervin and Henry, in heavy equipment construction then went to work at E & G Construction for many years. He loved to putter around the farm and liked taking breaks throughout the day. He enjoyed driving his 1982 Datsun 280 and his red corvette.

He is survived by three sons, Andy Pottschmidt, Khris Pottschmidt and Steven (Beth) Pottschmidt; and one daughter; Anna (Jim) Pratt. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Nicholas, Ava, Kourtney, and Whitney Pottschmidt, and Abbey and Sam Pratt.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Nancy, his parents, and his two brothers; Henry and Ervin Pottschmidt.

Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, 2016, at Voss Chapel. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery.

Friends and family may gather at Voss Chapel Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Thursday after 12 noon until time of service.

Memorial checks may be written to Immanuel Lutheran School Scholarship Fund, Trinity Lutheran School Scholarship Fund or the Pratt Family Scholarship Fund.

Gerald was always so friendly and good-hearted. He was a great uncle and father as he raised a very fine family. A very devout Christian man he led by example. He will certainly be missed but he's now in perfect peace with my dad.

Ever since my brother Tom Pottschmidt told me that Uncle Gerald had passed over I am having a hard time keeping the tears in check. Uncle Gerald was a kind and caring person with a smile for everyone. His hugs and kind words brought me such comfort at the funeral of my older brother, Gordon, and I hope my words of condolence will bring some comfort to my cousins and other family members. While my health keeps me from traveling across the miles to give you each a hug, I am pouring out my heart to you and know that your faith in the Lord and love of family and friends will give you strength as you celebrate your father's long and fulfilling life.
