Harlan Henry Dringenburg, 90 of Seymour, Indiana, passed away Monday, March 28, 2016, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born February 5, 1926, in Seymour, Indiana, the son of the late Fred Henry and Ethel Ruth (Schafstall) Dringenburg.
He married Delores Stockamp on July 29, 1951, and she preceded him on March 8, 2009.
Harlan graduated from Cortland High School in 1944, received his B.S. Degree from IU in 1948 and his Master’s Degree in 1951. In 1950, he served in the US Army during the Korean War. He went through Basic Training at Fort Knox and was a classroom instructor at Fort Lee. He served under the Adjutant General at Fort Harrison. After the Army, he taught at Cortland High School until they consolidated with Seymour High School where he taught until he retired in 1991.
Harlan was a lifetime member and very active at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Borchers. He was the organist for 33 years and directed the church choir for 67 years. He played the organ and sang for over 100 weddings. He was also Chairman of the congregation for several terms. He was President of the Borchers Mutual Fire Insurance Company until 2014. He was a lifetime member of the Jackson County Farm Bureau and belonged to the Indiana State Teacher’s Association and the National Education Association. He also enjoyed doing some farming from 1951 to 2005. After his wife passed in 2009, he started attending the “Breakfast Club” at church every Thursday morning where he looked forward to socializing. He was always very grateful to those who made this opportunity available. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his children, Janet (Jerry) Fogleman, Darlene (Mike) Schepman, Dean (Kim) Dringenburg; four grandchildren, Angela, Alex, Eric and Karen; great-granddaughter, Makaylah, step-grandchildren, Jennifer (Dan) and Gina; and step-great-grandchildren, Taylor, Matthew and Shane.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and his two sisters, Paula and Ruth.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 1, 2016, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Borchers. Burial will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Borchers with a Military Flag Presentation.
Friends and family may gather at Voss Chapel on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Friday after 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
