Mr. Harry C. Cherry, 99 of Seymour passed away Saturday, August 09, 2014 at home with his family by his side.
He was born May 21, 1915 in Indianapolis, the son of the late Edward and Minnie Cherry.
On December 21, 1946 in Indianapolis he married Georgie Enyert, who passed away, May 29, 2013.
Mr. Cherry was a graduate of George Washington High School in Indianapolis, where he excelled as a student athlete in football, basketball and track. He was a former state pole vault champion. In September of 2013, Mr. Cherry was inducted by George Washington High School to their Wall of Distinction.
After graduating High School, Mr. Cherry attended Indiana University, where he played football. He was a starting halfback for three years from 1934 to 1936. IU honored Mr. Cherry with the 50 year I-Man and the 75 year I-Man awards. In 2010, Mr. Cherry served as the IU Football homecoming parade Grand Marshall. Mr. Cherry held the distinction of being the oldest living IU football player.
During World War II, Mr. Cherry served his country as Lieutenant in the Army Air force from 1941 to 1945; being stationed on Tinian Island.
Mr. Cherry stayed well connected to his old IU sports days by being an enthusiastic fan and supporter of IU football and basketball. Mr. Cherry was also an avid golfer.
In 1980, Mr. Cherry received the Citizen of the Year award from the Seymour Chamber of Commerce. In May of 1982, Mr. Cherry was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel.
Mr. Cherry started his career working with the young in Indianapolis at the Boys Club Field. During his career he worked in several clubs and with the Boys Club Camp. With the Boys Club he was honored to receive the Distinguished Service Award; the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Indianapolis Boys and Girls Clubs of Indianapolis; and the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Several generations of young men in Seymour awarded him with the title “Mr. C”.
Mr. Cherry retired as the executive director of the Boys Club. Mr. Cherry was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Seymour.
He is survived by his children Steve Cherry and Mindy (Steve) Stanfield. Grandchildren Kyle (Amy) Stanfield and Kelly Stanfield, great grandchildren Izzy and Callen.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, 8 brothers and 4 sisters.
Funeral service will be held at Voss Funeral Service on Wednesday, August 13th, at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. John Erickson officiating.
Buiral will follow at Riverview with a Voss Dove release. Full military honors will be presented by the V.F.W. Post #1925, American Legion Post #89, DAV, Korean and Vietnam Veterans all of Seymour.
Family and friends may call at Voss Chapel on Tuesday from 4- 7 and on Wednesday after 9:30 a.m. until time of service.
