Herman Henry Hackman, 93, of Seymour, Indiana, passed away November 27, 2015, at home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born August 22, 1922, in Vallonia, Indiana, the son of the late Herman and Lillie Hinnefeld Hackman.
He married Edith Terkhorn at Wegan on June 12, 1949, by Rev. H.M. Hansen.
Mr. Hackman graduated from Vallonia High School in 1941 and Purdue University in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Science-Agronomy. He served in WWII as a 2nd Lt. In the Air Force as a Navigator on a B-17. He was recalled during the Korean War and taught navigation at Ellington Air Force Base in Houston, Texas. He taught agriculture at Vallonia to the men on the GI Bill prior to the Korean War. He was employed as an advisor for the local Farm Bureau Co-op and as a District Sales Representative with the State Farm Bureau Co-op. He was a charter member of Zion Lutheran Church, member of the Farm Bureau Lutheran Layman’s League, 4-H Leader, Lutheran Braille Workers Leader, Meals on Wheels, American Legion, Sunday School teacher, and served in other capacities at Zion Lutheran Church. He loved playing tennis, golf and cards. He enjoyed traveling in an RV and traveled the 50 states as well as throughout Europe during his retirement.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, his children: Rodney K. (Elaine) Hackman, Stewart L. (Kristi) Hackman, Jill Annette (Brian) Block, and Jana Leigh (Sonny) Teal; his grandchildren: Andy Hackman, Dr. Michael (Carly) Hackman, Danielle Fernandez, Noah Hackman, Paul (Jill) Hackman, Mark Hackman, Kara (Marcus) Mathis, Brianne (Jeremy) Childs, Rachel (Joe) Ahrens, Daniel Block, Julie Block, Leigh Anne (Lucas) Chamberlayne, Elizabeth (Justin) Greenlee, and Leeza (Blake) Scheidt; 14 great-grandchildren, his sister, Erma Cline, a sister-in-law, Louise Hackman.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers: Otto, Benjamin, Roy and Lewis Hackman.
The family would especially like to recognize two wonderful caregivers, Lena Klaes and Debby Ruddick.
Funeral Service will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 1, 2015, at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jeffrey Stuckwisch officiating. Burial will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery with full military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled Veterans 47, Korean and Vietnam Veterans, all of Seymour.
Friends and family may call at Voss Chapel on Monday, November 30, 2015, from 4 to 8 p.m. and at Zion Lutheran Church Tuesday after 9:00 a.m. until time of service.
