Jack D. Hammond, 86, passed away peacefully after a brief illness, April 26, 2024, at his home in Seymour. He was born June 4, 1937, in Elizabethtown, Indiana, to the late Russell and Virginia (Vest) Hammond.
Jack married his sweetheart, Nancy Moritz, on November 24, 1962, and she survives. The two were inseparable. Jack is remembered as a gentle, soft-spoken man who cared about his wife and family more than anything else in the world. He was a selfless person who took care of everyone he loved. Described as a “yard-mowing machine,” he took great pride in keeping his lawn just so and keeping his vehicles spotless. His many interests included nature photography and a love of wild birds, which he fed and photographed. He also loved jigsaw puzzles, coloring with colored pencils (mostly nature and birds), and collecting model cars.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 62 years, Nancy; his children, Sarah (Rawleigh Mitchell) Owen and Mark (Diana) Hammond; grandchildren, Cody (Brittany) Owen, Chris (Abigail) Hammond, Josh Hammond, and Alison Hammond; several great-grandchildren; sister, Rosalyn Trimpe; and niece, Dee (Kevin) Beavers.
He is preceded in death by his parents, listed above; and brothers, James Russell Hammond and Jerry Hammond.
Funeral services for Jack will be held Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at 1:00 pm at Voss and Sons Funeral and Cremation Services, 316 North Chestnut Street, Seymour. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 11:00 am until the time of the service.
