Steve Simmons left a message on May 16, 2017:
Margaret, my mother, was a child of Jackson County soil. Born and reared on "the Rapp farm" in Rockford, she was a good student--so good, in fact, that she was passed directly from second grade to fourth grade. She always regretted that because it doomed her to be the shortest person in her grade for the remainder of her time in the Seymour schools. She taught for a short time in Kasting School after obtaining her teaching certificate from Indiana University. She taught reading and writing to GIs at Camp Atterbury for two years during WWII. She moved to Terre Haute after the war and lived there until 1965. She and her husband then moved to New York and New Jersey. My favorite memory of my mother in Jackson County is from the summer of 1955 when she took me to Pearson's Barber Shop on Chestnut Street and allowed me to get a Mohawk haircut. I had wanted to be an American Indian and this was the easiest way for me to try to attain to such an identity. It was the first time had ever done anything that was "outside the box" and I will always appreciate that my mother gave me the license to go for it! :-)
