Marguerite Florence Sousley Scott, 88, formerly of Seymour, Indiana, passed away Friday, November 20, 2015 in Bloomington surrounded by loving family.
She was born November 9, 1927 in Jeffersonville, Indiana, the daughter of Frederick and Agnes Knapp Sousley, both of whom preceded her in death.
On Jan. 31, 1953, she married Lloyd E. “Barney” Scott in Madison, IN. He preceded her in death on March 13, 2013.
Marguerite was a 1945 graduate of Jeffersonville High School.
She earned her BA in Speech and Masters in Education from Indiana University.
Marg began her teaching career in 1952 in Lowell, IN. She retired from teaching many years later from Seymour Community Schools after teaching English and Vocabulary for 17 years at Seymour Junior High and High School. As an English teacher she never liked to hear someone end a sentence in a preposition. When someone would ask (Where something is at?) She would always respond with “Behind the At.”
Marguerite also served her community in many other ways.
She was on the Girls Club of America board of directors for 10 years.
She was also a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority at Indiana University and was on the “House Corp Board” and was recognized in 2014 for her years of service with the naming of a room at the house in her honor.
She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Honorary Society, Psi lota Xi Philanthropic Sorority, Indiana and Jackson County Retired Teachers Association, and Jeffersonville Class of ’45 reunion committee. She was also an active member of First United Methodist Church in Seymour for most of her life.
In retirement, she and her husband Barney, traveled all over the United States. They also enjoyed many trips with “The Gang.”
She was an avid golfer who recorded a “hole in one” and loved watching golf on TV. She was also a big IU and Seymour High School sports fan. As a former coach’s wife she was seldom in agreement with the referees wearing black and white striped shirts and carrying whistles around their necks, especially if the call went against her beloved Owls and Hoosiers. She affectionately yelled, “You Bodacious Idiot” at the officials to show her displeasure.
But most of all she was the most loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and supported everyone unconditionally in their activities and pursuits through both good times and bad.
She is survived by her two daughters; Alice (John) Laskowski and Ellen (Kenneth) Gauck, her son, Gregg (LuAnn) Scott, nine grandchildren; Allyson Spuller, Drew Spuller, Scott Laskowski, Kim Laskowski, Samantha (Kane) Grote, Hannah Gauck, Nicholas Gauck, Beau Scott and Brooks (Amanda) Scott. Five great-grandchildren; Corey, Isabella, Ellie Jane, Claire and Waylon. Her sister-in-law Rhoda Hedge and brothers-in-law, Roy Scott and Charles (Nancy) Scott and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, father and mother-in-law; Lloyd and Alice Scott, her sister, Allegra Alexander and her brother, Willard Wildrick.
Funeral service will be at The First United Methodist Church Seymour 201 East 3rd Street Seymour, on Tuesday November 24th, 2015, at 5:30 pm with Rev. Sandy Cooper officiating.
