Mark Steven Combs, “Combsie”, 65, Seymour, Indiana, passed away on June 2, 2015, at Community Heart and Vascular Hospital due to complications from surgery.
Mark was born in Seymour, Indiana, on March 26, 1950, to Stanley “Dick” Combs and Beulah Newkirk Combs. He was lucky enough to have two older brothers, Glen Dale (Linda) Combs and David Lee Combs. He had 3 amazing (if we do say so ourselves) children; Jessica (Michael) Harrison, Monica (Aaron Smith) Combs and Brandon (Shaun Burke) Combs. The amazing kids then gave him even more amazing grandkids; Liam Combs, Lily Combs-Smith, Lachlan Harrison, Lucy Combs-Smith and Baby Harrison (coming soon).
He was preceded in death by his parents, his baby brother and best friend, Casey Combs (survived by Helen), and his sweet granddaughter, Adeline Rose Suzanne Harrison.
Mark graduated from Seymour High School and received a Bachelors of Science from Ball State University. While in college, he was a member of Sigma Epsilon.
In 1981, Mark took a job with Jay C Food Stores. He spent the next nearly 30 years cultivating lifelong friendships and an impressive list of professional and community accolades.
The better part of his life was spent on the golf course. He started golfing at nine years old. He continued golfing throughout high school to avoid getting a job. This was a Combs tradition and Mark was not going to be the first to break it. He continued golfing his entire life and claimed an impressive seven holes-in-one. His love of golf created numerous friendships. He patiently taught all three of his children how to drive, chip and putt; regularly citing, “never leave it short of the hole”. In the last few years, Mark also taught his grandchildren a love for the game.
Our dad was one of the greatest men we’ve had the privilege to meet. He gave pearls of wisdom such as “You can marry in ten minutes what it will take to make in a lifetime”. We all regret not taking this advice. He could also mix a perfect lemonade and vodka. He loved the beach, only second to golf, and also Crown Royal and cigars. He never missed a Father-Daughter Dance with his girls or a chance to do the Funky Chicken.
Dad lived and loved life. In addition to his family, he leaves behind an amazing group of friends: Ben, George, Jane, Steve, John, Troy and Kenny just to name a few, and his girlfriend, Shelly Cooley. We grew up hearing daily what a great guy we have for a dad. We couldn’t agree more.
Mark attended Immanuel Lutheran Church his entire life where he served as an usher and elder. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and held positions at the Seymour Chamber of Commerce.
The great golf course in the sky had better be prepared. Mark Combs has arrived.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 4 and 9 a.m. Friday, June 5 at Voss & Sons Funeral Home in Seymour, IN. A memorial service will follow at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial checks may be written to the American Heart Association or March of Dimes.
