Mary Elizabeth Vehslage, 97, of Seymour passed away on Friday, February 27, 2015, at the Lutheran Community Home. Mary was born on August 22, 1917, near Cortland, IN, to Edward and Ethel (Abel) Vehslage. They preceded her in death. Mary was caregiver to her younger brother, John D. Vehslage. He also preceded her in death.
Mary graduated from Cortland High School in 1935 and enrolled at Indiana University, graduating with degrees in Physical Education and Social Work. She retired from the Indianapolis Community Center in 1950, having served as director.
In 1956, Mary helped establish Happy Hollow Children’s Camp in Brown County. Mary hoped the camp would provide inner-city children with opportunities to experience nature and camping.
In 1995, she received the Heart and Soul award from the American Camp Association. In 2002, she was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash by then Governor, Frank O’Bannon.
After the death of her father, Mary managed the family farm north of Cortland, and the Vehslage Building in Seymour. Mary was a member of the Jackson County Historical Society. She worked tirelessly to save and preserve several buildings in downtown Seymour. Mary was a long-time member of Indiana Farm Bureau, the Covered Bridge Society and the Indiana University Alumni Association. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Seymour.
Family and friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday, March 4, 2015, at the Voss Funeral home. The funeral service will begin at 10:30 a.m., with Pastor Scott Roberts officiating. Burial will follow the service in Riverview Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Peace Lutheran Church and Happy Hollow Children’s Camp.
