Roger Dale Mellencamp, 80, Seymour, went to be with the Lord on March 3, 2023. He was born on April 19, 1942, to Armin Mellencamp and Dolores (Burbrink) Mellencamp. As a teenager, Roger fell hard for the love of his life, Naomi Joyce Polley and they married July 2, 1960. They had two beautiful children, Debra Ann and Todd Dale.
Family came first to Roger and he will forever be missed by his grandchildren; Alicia (Hunbun) and her husband, Bryce (Utter) Utt, Josh (Bugsy) and his wife, Elizabeth (Hotlips) Copeland, Blake (Wormy) and his wife, Lauren (Tweety) Mellencamp, Zachary (Scooter) and his wife Chaille (Sweettart) Mellencamp.
Nothing would put a bigger smile on his face than seeing one of his great grandchildren; Brycen (Speedy) Copeland, Alex & Quinn Utt, Mailey & Ryker (Jack) Copeland, Rowyn (Rolly) & Emersyn Mellencamp and Everett & Emmett Mellencamp.
Roger is survived by his son in law, Curt Copeland, daughter in law, Donna Mellencamp; his grandchildren; his great grandchildren; siblings, George (Jodi) Mellencamp, Carol (Doug) Roher, and Mark Mellencamp; several nieces and nephews and his beloved neighbors who he cherished dearly.
He experienced many heartbreaking losses in his lifetime but never lost his faith in the Lord and was a faithful servant until the end. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Armin and Dolores; his wife, Naomi; his daughter, Debra; his son, Todd; his sister, Brenda; and infant grandson, Brandon Mellencamp.
Roger or “Rog” as many knew him, never met a stranger and anyone that knew him could always count on a genuine smile and a firm pat on the shoulder with a “How ya doin Bud” greeting. He could be found working in his garden, relaxing in his driveway, or sitting at the kitchen table watching the news and having a Miller Lite. His love of the color yellow was infectious, and he could often times be found wearing a yellow shirt or socks and even a yellow truck at one time.
He was the knower of all things, from gardening, building, to home repair, he was the ultimate do it yourselfer. Roger could grow just about anything and was more than willing to give gardening advice to anyone that needed help but his favorite was sharing the product from his garden with those he loved.
Most importantly, Roger loved the Lord with all his heart and would often give advice from scripture, enjoyed memorizing favorite verses and lived his life with the ultimate goal of meeting Jesus one day.
Roger worked at Polley Building Supply for 45 years as a concrete truck driver. In their younger years, Roger and Naomi owned and rented apartments. Hard work was not something he was afraid of, and he has set that example for generations to come.
Roger believed you cannot out give God and faithfully gave to following causes: Billy Graham, Gleener’s Food Bank, International Children and Jews, Paralyzed Veterans, Christian Appalachian Project and Children’s International.
Visitation will be held at Voss & Sons Funeral Service on Sunday March 5, 2023, from 1pm to 5pm, and then on Monday March 6, 2023 from 9am until the time of service at 10am. Burial will follow service at Riverview Cemetery.
